# Understand GWP and CO2 equivalent calculations

KoudSmart uses **GWP** values to calculate **CO2 equivalents** for reporting.

This keeps climate impact data consistent across refrigerants.

### Basic formula

CO2 equivalent in tonnes is based on refrigerant quantity and the refrigerant GWP value.

### Why this matters

* different refrigerants have different climate impact
* reporting needs a comparable output
* incorrect refrigerant setup affects the final numbers

{% hint style="info" %}
The calculation depends on the refrigerant that is configured and selected in the daily process.
{% endhint %}

### Frequently asked questions

<details>

<summary>Do users calculate this manually?</summary>

No.

KoudSmart handles the calculation in the reporting flow.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Why does refrigerant selection matter?</summary>

Because each refrigerant can have a different GWP value.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Should I verify unexpected values?</summary>

Yes.

Unexpected results often point to incorrect setup or wrong transaction data.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://knowledge.out-smart.com/marketplace-packages-and-power-ups/power-ups/f-gases-forms-koudsmart/understand-gwp-and-co2-equivalent-calculations.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
