# Set task dates and deadlines

Dates help you plan task work and spot overdue follow-up.

You can set when a task starts and when it is due.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Set the start date

Fill in **Start Date** if the work should begin at a specific moment.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Set the due date

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Add times if needed

Add a start time or due time when your process needs more precision.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Save

Save the task.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

### Why dates matter

* they support planning
* they help with overdue monitoring
* they give better task filtering

### Frequently asked questions

<details>

<summary>Can I create a task without a due date?</summary>

Yes.

But then deadline-based follow-up is less clear.

</details>

<details>

<summary>What happens when the due date passes?</summary>

Your task workflow can show it as overdue or expired.

That depends on the status logic in your setup.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Can I change the due date later?</summary>

Yes.

Edit the task and save the new date.

</details>

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://knowledge.out-smart.com/marketplace-packages-and-power-ups/power-ups/tasks/set-task-dates-and-deadlines.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
